Microfiber Beach Towels: GSM, Print and MOQ Guide

Published: 2026-10-28 · Last updated: 2026-10-28

Short answer: three numbers decide a microfiber beach towel — the weight in gsm (which sets hand-feel and cost), the finished dimensions (which set your price point and fabric consumption), and the print method (which decides whether your artwork survives). Get those right in the tech pack and the rest follows.

What microfiber actually is

“Microfiber” is not a fibre type — it is a fibre size. The filaments are finer than a human hair, typically under one denier. Finer filaments create far more surface area per gram, and that is why the fabric absorbs so much water relative to its weight and dries so quickly.

In beach towels the base is usually polyester, sometimes a polyester-nylon blend. It is not the same product as a cotton terry towel, and it should not be compared to one on absorbency alone: microfibre wins on drying speed and packability, terry wins on plushness and the hotel feel.

GSM: the number that sets everything

GSM (grams per square metre) is the single most useful specification in a towel brief.

RangeCharacterTypical use
200–250 gsmVery light, packs small, dries fastestTravel, gym, promotional, kids'
250–300 gsmLight but with some bodySurf and beach ranges, the volume sweet spot
300–400 gsmSubstantial, softer hand-feelPremium retail, resort, gifting
400 gsm+Heavy, plushHigh-end spa positioning (less common in microfibre)

Going up in weight raises fabric cost roughly in proportion, and it slows drying. That trade-off is the whole argument: a heavier towel feels more expensive in the hand but performs worse on the two things microfibre is actually for.

Dimensions: where price is decided

Fabric is sold by the metre, so the finished size directly sets your cost per unit. Common beach towel sizes:

Size (cm)Common nameNotes
70 × 140Small / kids'Good entry price, suits children's ranges
80 × 160Standard beachThe most common adult beach size
90 × 170Large beachPremium feel, more fabric cost
100 × 180Oversized / loungerResort and poolside positioning

Always state a tolerance. Flat goods are easy to measure, so a buyer can and will measure them; agreeing ±2 cm up front avoids a dispute.

One practical caution: shrinkage. If the base contains cotton or a cotton blend, allow for it. Pure polyester microfibre shrinks very little, which is one of its advantages.

Print methods and what they do to your artwork

Sublimation (all-over)

The standard for microfibre, and the reason microfibre is the print-led choice. Dye is converted to gas and bonded into the polyester fibres, so the print becomes part of the fabric rather than sitting on top of it. Results:

  • Full-bleed, edge-to-edge artwork with no white border.
  • No hand-feel penalty — the print is not a layer you can feel.
  • Wash-durable, because there is no ink film to crack.
  • Unlimited colours at no extra cost, unlike screen printing.
  • Limit: only works on polyester-dominant fabric. It will not bond to cotton.

Screen print

Best for simple spot-colour designs, logos and small placement prints. Cheaper than sublimation for one- or two-colour work, but each additional colour adds a screen and a setup cost, and on a large flat area the ink film can be felt.

Embossing / textured finish

Heat and pressure create a raised or debossed pattern in the fabric itself. This works well for tonal designs and logo marks without any print at all, and it reads as premium. It limits you to a single colour, so it suits a solid-ground range rather than a graphic one.

Finishing details that buyers notice

  • Hem style — a simple folded hem is cheapest; bound edges and rounded corners cost more but look more finished.
  • Corner loop or hang tag — a small loop for hanging is a cheap addition that reads as considered.
  • Care label — required for retail, and easy to forget in a first quote.
  • Packaging — a printed belly band or polybag label turns a commodity towel into a retail product.

MOQ and lead time

Our standard terms for beach towels are 100 pcs per design, with sampling in 7–10 days and bulk production in 25–40 days after PP sample approval. Towels sit at a lower MOQ than garment styles because there is no size grading and less construction — which makes them a low-risk way to test a print direction before committing to a full apparel range.

Quality checks worth specifying

  1. Colour fastness — ask for a wash test, especially on dark grounds and saturated prints.
  2. Dimensional stability — measure before and after a wash cycle.
  3. Print registration — on sublimation, check that the artwork is centred and not stretched at the edges.
  4. Hem integrity — pull-test the stitching at the corners, where towels fail first.

If you intend to claim absorbency or quick-dry performance on the label, agree the test method with your supplier before production — a claim you cannot evidence is a liability, not a selling point.

Summary

Pick the weight that matches your positioning (250–300 gsm for volume surf ranges, 300–400 for premium), choose dimensions that hit your target price, and use sublimation if the design is graphic. State tolerances, specify a wash test, and start at 100 pieces per design so you can test the print before scaling.

Frequently Asked Questions

250-300 gsm is the volume sweet spot for surf and beach ranges. 200-250 gsm suits travel and promotional work where packability matters most, and 300-400 gsm gives a more substantial premium hand-feel at higher fabric cost.

80 x 160 cm is the most common adult beach size. 70 x 140 cm suits kids' and entry price points, and 90 x 170 or 100 x 180 cm are used for premium and oversized resort positioning.

Yes. Sublimation printing bonds dye into polyester fibres, giving full-bleed edge-to-edge colour with no hand-feel penalty and no ink film to crack. It requires a polyester-dominant fabric.

100 pcs per design, with sampling in 7–10 days and bulk production in 25–40 days after PP sample approval. Towels sit lower than garment styles because there is no size grading.

Ask for a wash test to check colour fastness and dimensional stability, inspect print registration for centring, and pull-test the hem stitching at the corners. Agree any performance claim with a test method before production.
